NYC: Beware of Herpes E-mail
Tuesday, 10 June 2008

The New York Times ran this article yesterday, it was frightening: City’s Genital Herpes Rate Is Above National Average
Excerpts from the article (data from 2004 among representative sample of NYC adults 20 or over):

More than one-fourth of adult New Yorkers — 26 percent, compared to the national average of 19 percent — are infected with herpes simplex virus 2

it facilitates the spread of H.I.V.

The new study found that the genital herpes virus was more common among women than men (36 percent versus 19 percent), among blacks than whites (49 percent versus 14 percent), and among men who have sex with men than those who don’t (32 percent versus 18 percent).

Living in an Elevator Building E-mail
Tuesday, 10 June 2008

It was only a month or so ago that I was complaining that another B line apartment was on sale on the 24th floor (of 25 floors).  It had amazing views and due to the housing slump was minimally more expensive than my 11th floor B unit. Now that we are being fully assulted by the sun (it was 98º at 8pm, "feels like" temp: 104º) and Yorkville had a brownout, I'm happy to report that I am fine living on the 11th floor.

I came home yesterday around 7pm to find ConEd workers right outside my apartment and could only think of the worse...the power was out and I'd have to stick the night out in my sweltering apartment.  But the lobby was cool and the elevators were working soI breathed a sigh of relief and declared myself free from a potentially hellish night.

Upon returning to my apartment at 10pm (approximate temperature 94º, feels like 100º) I see an "out of order" sign on one of the elevators...no problem, I'll just take the other one.  Nope, I'm shit out of luck and I resign to walking the 11 floors in a stuffy stairwell.  Oh, then I had to do it again this morning and probably on my way home tonight too.

You win mother nature.

Cursive E-mail
Friday, 06 June 2008

I saw Cursive play on Tuesday night at Mercury Lounge.  Unforunately for me, some jerk in front of me elbowed my beer causing it to spill all over my shirt and chest.  He saw what he did, told his girlfriend and they both turned around to watch my attempt to rid my formerly clean self of half my beer, and he didn't even apologize (this happened during the set change before Cursive came on so the music wasn't loud).  Regardless, the show was amazing.  They just finished recording their next album and spent 2/3 of the show playing some of their new songs and then revisited some of their older songs that made the crowd go nuts.

All this reminds me of is the fact that I no longer have my beloved Oink :(

Triathlon E-mail
Thursday, 05 June 2008
So I found a triathlon I could do (I had a number of requirements: it had to be after late August, a sprint tri, have no more than 3 miles of running, and be within driving distance from my parents place), and am now officially in training.  It's August 16th at Harriman State Park and is a 1/2 mile swim, 16 mile bike and 3.1 mile run.  I'm looking forward to the 1.5 mile, 700+ foot uphill section :)

Catcher in the Rye E-mail
Friday, 30 May 2008

So I'm starting to read all these books that I was forced to read in high school, but now for pleasure.  I'm sure when I was a kid I wrote a crappy as hell paper about The Catcher in the Rye, and I read the book just so I could write that awful essay.  This time I was able to enjoy the book for what it was, without trying to analyze every line and instead enjoying the book as a whole.  I'm sure it took me weeks of painful reading to finish this book (any every other book I was forced to read), this time it only took me two days.

Sometimes I worry that people think that I'm phoney.  I'm not sure what is scarier, knowing that some people think I am, or knowing that some of my friends are.  I need my own Phoebe!

Also, while it was a great book, rest assured I will not become obsessed with it like Mark David Chapman or John Hinkley Jr and I do not own any guns... though if you are phony and know where the ducks go in the winter, look out!

Les Savy Fav E-mail
Friday, 23 May 2008

Well, that was one hell of a show.  It's always a plus when they charge you $4 for a can of PBR!  You can get a 6 pack at the Food Emporium for $3.99.  Anyway, I've seen pictures from previous shows so I sorta knew what to expect...that the singer likes to take his clothes off, have wardrobe changes and ridiculous on stage antics.

Iron Man E-mail
Thursday, 22 May 2008

First of all...Great movie! I had questioned the casting of Robert Downy Jr as Tony Stark, but he did a great job.

After I came in to the office raving about the movie, I was pointed to some reviews that found Iron Man both sexist and racist - both of which I do not agree with.  They made claims such as:

Pepper Potts, Stark's personal assistant, does little to combat the sexist portrayal of women in Iron Man. Sure, she wears a suit in most of her scenes - Hollywood short-hand for 'smart.' She also carries a clip board and scolds our hero when he misses meetings, which clearly indicates competence, right? Yet, she still goes gaga for the boss who manipulates her. Ms. Potts tries to kiss Stark immediately after expressing her discomfort at his forcing her to dance with him despite her attempts to turn him down.

And for how the movie is so racist:

"Funny" scenes include a bullet bouncing off the super fighting suit and hitting an attacker in the head - killing him instantly.

This disparity in the depiction of violence shown towards people of color vs. white westerners is also evident as the Afghan bad guys are shown dropping to the ground or being engulfed in flames to a rock-and-roll score; but when the white villain (played by Jeff Bridges) bites the dust, well, the audience is not shown the result of the fall that finishes him.

Anyway, I thought it was a great movie and highly recommend it!
