Iceland |
On June 1, 2006, I embarked on a four day trip to Iceland with my best friend from high school, Christian. Even getting to the airport was an adventure because we left at different times and I became locked into his flat. Leaving entailed climbing up and over the gated fence which had sharp spines all on top to prevent people from climbing in, but nothing would stop me, I was off to Iceland. So, up and over I went with my carry-on, jacket, and ridiculously oversized backpack which was stuffed to the brim with goodies and camping equipment hanging off from every available place that I could use lashing straps. Here's some articles about Iceland if you haven't been/don't know much about the country: NYTimes's "Iceland's Ring Road: The Ultimate Trip" , by Mark Sundeen (June 2006) TheStreet.com's "Land of Fire and Ice" by Sean Driscoll (May 2006) WSJ's "Icelanders' Love of Crazy Trucks Hits Deep Freeze" by Marcus Walker (May 2008)

First Stop, The Blue Lagoon |
There's nothing better than getting off the plane, getting in the car and driving 15 minutes for a relaxing dip in the Blue Lagoon. Iceland is famous for their geo-thermal hot pools. This is by far their most famous one. The water is so hot that they have to cool it before it enters the swimming area. There are hot areas where the hot waters is being mixed with cooler water that can nearly burn you. The air smells like sulfur (aka rotten eggs) from far away and the locals all use this sulfur-ous silica mud mix on their faces and skin as it has been proven to soften and rejuvinate your skin.
